We use local tour guides regularly, especially when we only have one full day in a major city like Lisbon. Sylvia Gomes was our ideal guide - with deep knowledge of the history of Lisbon and Portugal (and frankly, the world), and the ability to connect the past to the present. She figured out exactly what interested us, and accommodated the needs of both our 5-year old and 22-year old with a mix of walking, funicular, taxi, and tuk tuk over the course of 7 hours.
Sylvia is an officially licensed tour guide, and is passionate about Portuguese and world history. She doesn't simply rattle off facts, but she tells engaging stories, bringing each stop to life with colorful descriptions of the people and the place. Even between stops, there is always an interesting story to be told as she points out a decoration, a store front, or other detail that would otherwise go unnoticed. Her excitement for Lisbon is infectious.
We also enjoyed talking about daily life in Portugal, current events, as well as experiencing the local food and drink, which made for a well-rounded experience.
Sylvia made our visit to Lisbon unforgettably enjoyable and informative. She ranks as one of the best tour guides we've had.
