In the areas outside of Juarez, Mexico, many hard-working families live in homes constructed of shipping pallets and cardboard with dirt floors. Some are fortunate to have electricity, but many are not. Gang violence is part of the landscape. An outhouse is a luxury. Schools and libraries are non-existent. In the midst of this deep poverty, JCEP finds promising children with a desire to learn, and gives them that opportunity through scholarships. In a separate and related program (Mission Ministries), we met Scott Kline and Joni Cropper of JCEP, and volunteered to join Scott, Joni, and a literal busload of other volunteers on a trip to Juarez in 2009 to build simple homes and a library over the course of a few days together with the Juarez community members. After a hard day of building, the volunteers would relax together and share songs, make music, and make new friends. JCEP provided the books, computers, and everything that makes a library a library - even the librarian. While there, we learned just how difficult life is in Juarez, and how transforming housing and education can be. This is an amazing program where a little bit of money goes a very long way to making a big difference.
